Aircraft Rental Costs: Wet vs. Dry Rates

Understand aircraft rental costs, wet and dry rates, billed hours and the questions to ask before booking.

What does an hourly rental rate include?

An hourly rate is only useful when you know its basis. A wet rate generally includes fuel under the operator’s stated policy; a dry rate generally leaves fuel to the renter. Ask exactly what the operator includes and how fuel purchased away from the home airport is handled. Taxes, instruction and other charges may be separate. Treat the written rental terms as the deciding source.

Compare the same trip on the same basis

Request the billing method and estimated billed hours for your proposed itinerary. Hobbs and tach billing measure time differently, so the same number of minutes in the air need not produce identical bills. Ask whether an overnight booking has a daily minimum, which hours count toward it and whether the aircraft can stay away from base. Compare total estimates for the same dates and itinerary.

A simple planning example

At a hypothetical $180 wet hourly rate, three billed hours would be $540 before any separate charges. At a hypothetical $140 dry hourly rate, three hours would be $420 plus the fuel you must purchase and any separate charges. The $120 difference is not automatically a saving: you need the aircraft-specific fuel estimate and the operator’s fuel policy to compare the totals. These figures illustrate arithmetic, not a quote for an AV8FLY listing.

Ask about costs before sending a deposit

Request the checkout or instruction estimate, renter documentation requirements, deposit conditions, cancellation policy and any cleaning or late-return charges. If plans change, confirm how the operator handles unused hours, a weather cancellation or an aircraft substitution. Keep the written quote and agreement together so the trip estimate is easy to reconcile with the final bill.

Find a real aircraft to compare

Browse the aircraft directory for published rates and source contacts. Open the exact registration page, then confirm current terms directly with the operator. Use the rental checklist to organize your questions and Flight Desk to explore the trip. Directory prices are not a reservation, a live quote or a promise of availability.
